Originally a tea kiosk capped with a band rotunda, this building commemorates the coronation of King George V in 1912. Not a huge success as a band rotunda, as most performers preferred less breezy venues, it was time and fashion that saw the demise of the tea kiosk in the 1940s.
The Observatory, with its century-old Cooke refractor telescope, replaced the rotunda in 1954.
Now home to the Hāwera Astrolonomical Society, who host open nights, youth events and annual Puanga viewings.
