We’re here to identify knowledge gaps and conduct industry-led, self-funding research in the fields of Earth observation (EO), geospatial science and remote sensing technologies.
Xerra Earth Observation Institute builds tangible products and services using their research capabilities in Earth Observation (EO) and remote sensing technologies. Our headquarters are in the beautiful town of Alexandra in Central Otago.
Under our original name (Centre for Space Science Technology) we were a successful applicant in the Regional Research Institutes Initiative, administered by the Ministry for Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE). We received establishment funding from MBIE, enabling us to stand on our own and actively contribute to the wider science community.
We work with science partners and customers to engage in research, which not only contributes to the worldwide body of knowledge, but also delivers a return on investment for the users of our EO products and services.
EO is a burgeoning industry in New Zealand, enabling market leaders to harness the power of perspective and gain a competitive advantage.
Recognising the potential EO can offer a wide range of industries, we’re keen to support the development of New Zealand’s space ecosystem and EO market. We see the broad opportunities the space industry can provide, and we know that as a country we have something unique to offer the international community.
In order to be successful we must be pro-active and focused, like many of the customers we work with. As such, we have designed our organisation to be nimble — without sacrificing the efficacy of our work, and collaborative — without sacrificing our vision.
